Rather than reproducing historic pieces or mimicking a style as most historically-minded furniture does, ODO set out to gain a deeper understanding of the principles of organic design by designing a Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work—in this case, a Prairie-style home from its foundation to its furnishings. As is the organic design way, everything was designed using the same geometric grammar. The theory goes that designing everything using the same underlying elements ensures a harmonious whole. The furniture designs were so intriguing to ODO's designers that they eventually developed them into a commercial furniture collection. We told this unusual origin story through two micro-sites that take the audience through the project from design to a virtual walk-thru.
